we drift in a place I’ve never been
her eye blinks back at mine

she rolls over in trust
and with long strokes
I trace Keats’s words on her belly,
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty, — that is all
ye know on earth, and all ye need to know”

her rounded paddle-tail
moves and like unadorned mermaid
she’s gone

her absence
something to recover from
