My Mother is a Lilac Bush that never does not Bloom   Leave a comment

My mother died on March 11, 2008. I wrote this poem several years before she died, and I shared it with her.
The line “the wind fears her short breaths” was in reference to her disease Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease, which means she had emphysema, asthma, and bronchitis, and was on oxygen for around 10 years, but she never. Her breath was short but her strength, and bravery long.

My mother is a lilac bush that never does not bloom
she is not the wind that pushes itself on chilled necks
her lilacs drift onto eyelids like tiny silken drapes
and freshen the dreams of days

she’s the breeze that lifts your hair from forehead
on a hot day but never does she pretend to be the wind

she has brown eyes from a secret palette
the cat holds her tongue sometimes
but she’s too strong for the bear’s claws
sometimes she paints without hands

the wind fears her short breaths
she is not the wind

she is a lilac bush that never does not bloom
